Neonatal Intensive Care

This module explores the specialist knowledge and clinical skills in neonatal nursing care required to deliver neonatal intensive care to the neonate. The course will explore contemporary issues and developments in neonatal nursing care to provide holistic and evidence-based practice in the neonatal setting. This course will provide the skills and knowledge for students to evaluate the assessment, planning, delivery of care for the sick and preterm neonate. The altered anatomy and physiology of the sick and/or preterm neonate will be explored, with reference to level 1 (ITU) neonates. It is a requirement of the module that you are currently employed as a health care provider in the care of neonates, with students having already completed the HDU (PCPH3025) module. At the end of this module successful students will gain QiS (Qualified in Speciality) status and go on to care for the most vulnerable neonates in society, regardless of level of unit. We have a range of speakers that deliver on the module and I always encourage students to share experiences so we can evaluate optimal care.

Entry Criteria

Effective registration with the NMC / HPC or other relevant professional body
Undertaken successful level 4/5 academic study
Currently be employed in practice and have the support of their manager in undertaking the module
